Keeping the Faith

From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint.  Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

No matter how strong you are, everyone eventually faces storms that you can't weather in your own strength.  We need to be led to a rock that is higher than ourselves.  That's where faith comes in.  Faith isn't about having all the right answers, but it's about possessing the courage to believe in the One who does.

Sometimes when life seems unexplained, when things happen that I just can't seem to fathom, I return to a series of prayers in the book of Psalms (Psalms 61, 27, 91), presumably written by King David.  Here's a man who, for all intents and purposes had every reason to give up on believing in God, but never did.  So many tragedies befell him on the way to realizing his life's calling of becoming king, and even afterwards many more, but he never lost faith.  Why is that? I think the answer can be found in his prayer in Psalm 61.

You've always given me breathing room, a place to get away from it all, a lifetime pass to your safe-house, an open invitation as your guest.  You've always taken me seriously God, made me welcome among those who know and love you.

Like a father who takes the time to comfort a crying child, God knows better than we do what's on the other side of our turmoil, pain, or challenge.  But He takes our grief and our sorrows seriously, because He genuinely cares.  And that's why we can come to Him.  We may not get the answers we want, but we always get what we need.
